Coastal air is hard on generators
From Rumson to Spring Lake, salt air corrodes enclosure fasteners, battery terminals, and control-board connectors faster than inland units see in twice the time. Shore-area maintenance means dielectric grease on connections, corrosion treatment on the enclosure, and a close look at fuel lines and regulators. Inland, in Colts Neck and Marlboro, the enemy is different: mice nesting in warm enclosures chew low-voltage sensor wiring. We screen intake points and inspect harnesses on every visit.
Dead or weak battery
The single most common no-start. Batteries age out around year three, and a unit that passes its weekly exercise can still lack the cold-cranking amps to start under load in January.
Stale or low oil
Air-cooled Generac engines work hard and run hot. Old oil triggers low-pressure shutdowns exactly when the unit is needed for a multi-day outage.
Valve lash drift
On 990cc and 816cc air-cooled twins, valve clearances drift with heat cycles. The symptom is cranking without catching, and it is preventable with a feeler gauge and twenty minutes.
