Why generator batteries fail young

A standby generator battery lives outside through New Jersey summers and winters, held on a float charger, asked to deliver full cranking amps maybe twice a year. Heat cooks plates in August, cold cuts output in January, and float charging masks decline: the resting voltage looks fine right up until a cold-soak start pulls it below threshold. Three years is the realistic service life here. Shore-town corrosion on terminals shortens it further.

Load testing tells the truth

A multimeter reading of 12.6 volts says almost nothing. Our test applies a real cranking load and watches how the voltage holds, the same stress the battery faces on a 15-degree morning with thick oil. Pass means you get the date and numbers on your report. Fail means it gets replaced with the correct group size for your unit, installed with treated terminals, with charger output verified and the old core taken for recycling.

The charger matters as much as the battery

A failing charger kills new batteries in months, so every replacement includes a charger output check at the controller. Chronic undercharge and overcharge both leave fingerprints, and catching a bad charging circuit at battery time prevents the repeat no-start call a year later. It is a two-minute check worth doing with every battery.
